Munich - Munich Nationaltheater

Munich Nationaltheater Nationatheater
Munich opened its first opera house Am Salvatorplatz in 1654.Between 1679 and 1726, Italian opera reigned supreme in Munich. In 1753, Maximilian III Joseph commissioned the French architect François Cuvillies to build a theatre - to this day remains a household name to opera lovers everywhere. Mozart's Idomeneo was premiered there in 1781. Munich's main opera house was built in 1818, but burned down in 1823, was rebuilt within two years (thanks to a penny tax on beer). Thereafter, it continued until 1943 when Allied bombing finished it off. 1950 Munich Opera Festival restored. 1963 Nationaltheater reopens. 1993 Appointment of Peter Jonas as Staatsintendant (knighted by The Queen in 1999). 2006 Kent Nagano becomes General Music Director.
Since 2008, Nikolaus Bachler is engaged as Managing Director of the Bayerische Staatsoper and Kyrill Petrenko’s engagement as Bayerischer Generalmusikdirektor started in 2013. Both artists have extended their engagements until 2021.
