Florence: Cradle of the Renaissance. Surely the the most inviting stage for the unfolding story of art history in Europe. This wonderful pre-Christmas experience takes us to Florence after 8 December when the usual crowds melt away and the city of Dante, the Medicis and E M Forster Florence can be enjoyed in surprising serenity. This original tour has been designed for Opera in Style by the renowned writer and correspondent Adrian Mourby and will be led by him over five days.

Wed 09 December 2020
Mid-morning flight from London City airport direct to Florence. Transfer to our 4-star hotel located on the banks of the river Arno. After settling in, a one-hour orientation walk around the centre of the city taking in Ponte Vecchio, Piazza di Signoria, the Franco Zeffirelli Museum [exterior] and Duomo.

Early dinner at nearby restaurant.

Thu 10 December 2020 - "A ROOM WITH A VIEW"
Breakfast at the hotel.
Walk along the banks of the Arno stopping outside the Jennings Riccoli Albergo where E.M. Forster stayed with his mother and famously failed to get a room with a view! Continue on to the National Library, to Basilica Santa Croce containing containing Rossini's tomb and as much art as Lucy Honeychurch could visit on her own. In front of the basilica stands Dante's statue looking down on the Christmas market. In the company of Miss Eleanor Lavish we cross Ponte alla Gracie and up the steps through Florence's southern fortification to Piazzale Michaelangelo. From here the best views of Florence.

Lunch at nearby restaurant.  Afternoon free.

Evening: Dinner and a local performance.There are several Florentine venues performing opera or operatic arias in December. There is even Florence’s own version of The Three  Tenors.

Fri 11 December 2020 - "THE ISLAND OF THE DEAD"
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning free for shopping or enjoying the various palazzi in the centre of Florence who offer exhibitions.

After lunch, assemble at the hotel. In the afternoon we visit the English cemetery and the graves of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Holman Hunt's wife Fanny, Walter Savage Landor. Anyone who has seen Zeffirelli’s memoir  Tea with Mussolini will remember Judi Dench and Joan Plowright getting melodramatic around these tombs. On the way back we take in the Gherardexca Gardens and Accademia for the statue of David. Finally, to Medici Tombs at San Lorenzo.

Evening: Dinner and a concert or performance. The exquisite Goldini Theatre has a concert this evening.

Sat 12 December 2020 - "THE ITALIAN MASTERS"
Breakfast at the hotel. A morning visit to Uffizi Gallery which houses masterpieces by every Florentine painter as well as international Old Masters.  In the afternoon Teatro Maggio Musicale invites Opera In Style guests (uniquely) to attend a rehearsal of Linda di Chamounix [Donizetti] that will be performed over the Christmas period.

Evening: Dinner and a concert or performance. Dinner may be at Teatro del Sale, a unique Italian theatre run by the renowned chef, Fabio Picchi. Enthusiastically reviewed by the New York Times, Teatro del Sale feeds its guests in an old music hall before embarking on an evening of musical entertainment.

Sun 13 December 2020
Breakfast at the hotel. Day free for independent sightseeing.

Farwell lunch before late afternoon transfer to Florence airport for return flight to London City, arriving at 21h10.
