40th Anniversary Celebrations with World Premiere and an exciting opportunity to mark the 300th anniversary of a rare opera!

Buxton celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2019 with a new work which reflects a milestone in the restoration of the spa town’s development as the refurbishment of its Georgian Crescent comes to fruition.

Georgiana is a newly commissioned 40th Anniversary opera pasticcio, celebrating the life and times of Georgiana Cavendish, the 5th Duchess of Devonshire, whose husband built the Crescent, which is being restored as a luxury spa hotel.

Georgiana’s exciting and sometimes scandalous life formed the story for the Hollywood film The Duchess, starring Keira Knightley in the lead role.

The Festival’s other made-in-Buxton unique productions will be Eugene Onegin, Tchaikovsky’s sweeping tale of unfulfilled love conducted by the Festival’s new Artistic Director Aidan Kelly.

The Festival is postponing its proposed production of La Vestale after Adrian Chandler of the baroque specialists La Serenissima offered to produce Antonio Caldara’s Lucio Papirio Dittatore which had its premiere at the Hofteatre in Vienna in November 1719.

Ever-popular Opera della Luna will celebrate Offenbach’s 200th anniversary with their production of Orpheus in the Underworld.

Buxton is the perfect base for exploring the gorgeous Peak District. And if castles & historic houses and stately homes is your thing: Chatsworth, Haddon Hall & Renishaw Hall are close by.
