Owing to popular demand, we are running this second tour curated and escorted by Adrian Mourby.

This hugely popular, 4-night/5-day tour takes you into areas of Venice rarely visited by the groups of tourists who crowd around the main attractions. It also takes place at a beautiful and quiet time of year and includes visits to sights associated with composers such as Vivaldi, Monteverdi, Gabrieli, Stravinsky and Britten. There will be visits to two operas, one at La Fenice and one in a local palazzo.

Guided by Adrian Mourby, the renowned travel writer and novelist, we will walk the historic backstreets of Castello, Cannaregio and San Marco, taking time to see the remarkable art work of Titian, Tintoretto and Tiepolo in Venice’s beautiful – and often hidden - churches.

Adrian Mourby’s third novel “Wishdaughter” was partly set in Venice and he has been visiting the city for 30 years.  As he writes “Venice in winter is particularly beautiful. If you are lucky enough to be here when it snows, then you are particularly blessed. Venice, which is never noisy once you leave San Marco, falls completely silent as footsteps are muffled by the snow and the Baroque buildings of the city are enhanced by being reduced to gorgeous black and white”.

The tour will be based in the delightful 16th-century family-run hotel Palazzo San’Antonin, serenely situated on a minor canal but only a ten-minute walk from Piazza San Marco.

DAY 1:  Wednesday 23 January 2019

Morning departure from London Heathrow airport on British Airways to Venice, Marco Polo airport. Private transfer from airport to our delightful 4-star small, charming 16th-century hotel.  Light lunch on Riva degli Schiavoni followed by an introductory walk to Piazza San Marco.

Day 2: Thursday 24 January 2019

After breakfast a walk through the backstreets of Castello past the church where Vivaldi was Baptised. Castello is regarded by most Venetians as the “real” Venice. Then, stroll down Riva degli Schiavoni as far as Arsenale. Here Venice’s craftsmen could build a warship in a day. We end this walk at the mighty Church of San Francesco della Vigna and return to San Zaccaria by vaporetto.  Lunch in Castello followed by a free afternoon.

Evening: Over a glass of prosecco, Adrian will give a talk on today and on the next day’s tour.

Free evening. Dining under own arrangements. NB Optional Extra: The possibility may exist of participants attending one of a number of Vivaldi concerts – details to be provided nearer the time.

DAY 3: Friday 25 January 2019

After breakfast, walk through the backstreets of Castello to the Rialto Bridge, past the famous Malibran Theatre and the Miracoli church and as far as “Zanipolo” the Church of San Giovanni and Paolo, the finest Gothic Church in Venice which contains the tombs of 25 doges and some splendid baroque altars. Adrian will walk us back to Querini Stampalia.  Lunch at the Querini Stanpalia, one of the most important 18C aristocratic Venetian mansions now a museum.

Dinner in Dorsoduro and a talk by Adrian followed by dinner.

Walk back across Academia Bridge to a performance of Rigoletto at Musica a Palazzo.

We will then take a vaporetto over to the graves of Stravinsky, Diaghilev – and many others - on the cemetery island of San Michele. Lunch under own arrangements.
