Munich Opera Festival

Magnificent & Moving

P & E W from East Sussex

Dear Andrew and JC,

A quick note to say thanks for the organisation of the Munich trip.

All was great. Hotel really well placed and very helpful staff.

Both operas were well produced and sung with Paladino especially rightly getting a warm reception. A very clever production with some neat special effects to deal with the more intransigent bits of the plot to produce on stage involving  brilliant use of silent film- well worth seeing. Ivor Bolton and the Munich Kammerorchester on great form. Staying tuned in that weather was a feat in itself let alone having enormous fun with the score.

Les Vespres Sicilienne was an object lesson in how to deliver great opera with some sheets of black satin, some hanging wires, a brilliant cast of singing actors and a great band. Not Verdi's most consistently brilliant work but a deeply moving tale here played to the hilt by a top cast including Erwin Schrott and Rachel Willis-Sorenson.

Omer Meir Welber seems to love his Verdi and the whole thing was totally absorbing and rewarding.

Very best wishes
