Magnificent Milano

Teatro alla Scala is memorable

G & M S from Edinburgh

Dear Mr Blair,
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Milan, the first time we had visited that city.  It made a really pleasant arrival to find our driver waiting for us (with our surname correctly spelt on his board).  His conversation as he drove us into Milan was an introduction in itself to the city. I may say that we were delighted at the end of our stay to find that it was the same driver who took us back to the airport.

The highlights of our visit were of course the attendances at La Scala. Both operas, Falstaff and Wozzeck, were excellent productions and performances.  If I may quote your letter, they did in fact exceed our expectations.  Our seats, as we had requested, were at the end of a row, at the central aisle.

Our hotel was much to our liking. The staff were friendly and most helpful.  The breakfasts were actually served to us (rather unusual for hotels nowadays), and the home-made cake some mornings was a particular treat.  Our room was large and elegant.  Despite the size of the room there were no drawers for clothes, but we managed fine and in fact appreciated the absence of clutter.  It was a delight to find such a peaceful area so close to the Duomo and La Scala, and we soon found ways of easily avoiding the crowds wherever we went.

As regards daytime activities we found plenty of galleries, museums and parks, as well (as my wife will add) as interesting shopping areas.  We were even able, on our last day, to spend several hours at the Triennale Design Museum to see the immense exhibition entitled Food and Art, part of the EXPO 2015 event.  In finding our way around Milan, the little Eyewitness Travel book that you provided for us, was excellent.  It was comprehensive enough, and the map was sturdy and well-indexed.  It also fitted very well into a pocket.  We much appreciated the timed ticket voucher for entry to see Leonardo’s painting of The Last Supper, which we both found a very moving experience.  We had asked you for early entry, and so were able to be there among the first group of the day, before returning to the hotel for late breakfast.

In conclusion, we were most grateful to you for all that you did to make this a most memorable holiday.
