There is something of the Central European city about Trieste located 160 kms east of Venice - close to the border with Slovenia. It is also the largest seaport on the Adriatic.

Trieste is of very ancient origin; the Celts and Illyrians fought over the town before the Romans made it their great trading centre.

Things to see: Colle di San Giusto-this hilltop was the site of the ancient city and today the Piazza della Cattedraleis lined with teh ruins of teh Roman basilica, a 15C-16C castle, ; the Basilica di San Giusto;
