Founded in 184 BC, Pesaro is capital of the province in the Marche Region on the Adriatic coast. A popular summer resort for Italians, Pesario is also the birthplace of Gioachino Rossini (born 1792). Pesaro's cathedral revealed (as revcently as 2000) a remarkable mosaic floor dating from the 6th century belonging to the same period as the magnificent Byzantine mosaics at nearby Ravenna.
